Pasak Bumi, the Indonesian aphrodisiac

By Serge Kreutz Version 4.0, July 2003
Pasak bumi is a herbal medication (Jamu) widely used in Indonesia as an aphrodisiac for men. In Malaysia, the same medication is know as tongkat ali (Ali’s stick).
Even though it is largely unknown in the US and Europe, the pro-sexual effect of pasak bumi is actually well documented in Western science. Anybody can check this for himself at the Medline database.
To search for scientific information, one has to use the plants scientific, Latin name, eurycoma longifolia. The plant is also a proven therapeutic and preventive medication against malaria, so in order to focus the search on the pro-sexual properties, one should use the additional search term “sexual”.
I have tried several pasak bumi and tongkat ali products. I had no effect from the El Jack or Long Jack pills available in the US that claim to be a 1:100 extract. I have my doubts on that as I have seen documents on the FDA website that show that the people marketing these pills have just applied for a registration of tongkat ali powder in pill form, not of extract in pill form
I have also tried tongkat ali powder as it is sold in Malaysia. I had good sex at that time, but am not sure to what extend to attribute it to the tongkat ali.

I have then been challenged by the Indonesian tongkat ali company Sumatra Pasak Bumi (they run the websites pasakbumi.com and tongkatali.org; “pasak bumi” and “tongkat ali” are the same herbal by other names) to try their 1:50 extract and am now convinced that it has a testosterone-raising effect.
While most authors claim that one has to take pasak bumi for some time before its pro-sexual effect sets in, my experience with the 1:50 extract is that at a sufficient dosage (1 gram), there is an immediate effect.
What I feel first (after 1 to 2 hours) is a specific hot-headedness. In reports on human clinical trials, this hot-headedness has been referred to as facial flushing and headache. I believe that hot-headedness is a better description. It’s not a headache, as the hot-headedness is not painful. I also don’t think that facial flushing is a correct description. With “flushing” I would associate something that is immediate and temporary. But the hot-headedness persists for a few hours.
On the other hand, if one takes a 1-gram dosage for several days, this hot-headedness subsides. I assume that this is the case because one’s organism gets used to the presence of the pasak bumi (tongkat ali).
I have tried all kinds of tricks to raise my testosterone levels, and I have mentioned in other articles that I seem not to respond sexually to testosterone enhancement. I have tried straight testosterone supplementation, or supplementation with DHEA or andro, or hypothalamic stimulation with clomiphene, or aromatase inhibitors like anastrozole, as well as Tribestan, and then tongkat ali. Not that I wouldn’t have felt the increased testosterone levels. I did, especially with the clomiphene / anastrozole combination. I felt the increased testosterone levels as aggressiveness.
Well, the 1:50 tongkat ali extract is the first substance that makes me feel increased testosterone levels in a sexual way. But aggressiveness is again a major component.
I don’t think that the tongkat ali extract makes me a better lover, though. Sex tends to take less time on tongkat ali. And it’s much more egocentric and, yes, aggressive. I will be inclined to have a much stronger grip on my female partner, and enjoy the idea that I “take her”, rather than focusing on harmony.
The tongkat ali extract also gives me more ejaculatory power and makes me want to orgasm two or three times in rather quick sequence (within 10 minutes). This suggests that through increasing testosterone levels, the orgasmic release of the hormone prolactin is partially inhibited, or at least delayed. (A surge of prolactin at the time of orgasm is what usually causes detumescence and a cessation of desire.)
I am in my 50s now, but when I use 1 gram of the 1:50 tongkat ali extract, sex is much more similar to what it was in my 20s when, presumably, I had a better testosterone profile, and also was a much more aggressive person.
Actually, I even wonder whether the wide use of pasak bumi (tongkat ali) is one of the reasons behind communal violence in Indonesia and Malaysia. Both Malaysia and Indonesia are normally very friendly countries, but the native men in both countries also have a tendency to violent excesses, on a communal and personal level. The term “running amok” comes straight from the Malay family of languages. “Amok” means “violent anger” and “running amok” is a way of venting it… by going on a mad killing spree until the person running amok is killed himself.
Of course, the management of aggression isn’t entirely dependent on brain biochemistry or testosterone-raising substances like pasak bumi. Aggressiveness also is a behavioral component of our psychology. Plain awareness that aggressiveness usually is the wrong policy in human interactions already goes a long way in containing it.
Because of this, the increased aggressiveness resulting from ingesting pasak bumi must not necessarily result in communal or personal violence… or at least not in a form that would be noticeable to our fellow humans. I think that anybody using pasak bumi should know that the herbal can make aggressive; meditation exercises may be a good idea to make oneself better prepared for this effect.
I have tried many other alleged pro-sexual herbals, but apart from yohimbe and tongkat ali, I have never had a clear positive sexual result from any of them.
Sure, some of these other herbals may actually be healthy, ginkgo biloba for the brain, and ginseng for the kidneys (or whatever they want), but for the vital organ, they do nothing. Having the choice between ginseng and tongkat ali, I’d definitely go for the later.
Apart from an increased aggressiveness, the anabolic effect of increased testosterone levels should also be taken into account. During my trials of generous dosages of pasak bumi, I seemed to gain muscle even though I only do little weight exercise. Generous dosages of pasak bumi may not be suited for women, or for men who want to preserve a slender appearance.

Herbal Medicines For Depression

Author: Roger Thompson
Depression has come more and more to the forefront in health care in recent years. A great percentage of ailments that individuals present to their doctors today seem to have some form of mental/emotional complication which can be perceived as depression. The millions of individuals suffering clinical or symptomatic depression can experience great benefit from some specific attention to their own health as well as guidance from a health professional who understands the basic tenets of natural medicine. It is believed that in America approximately twenty million people in any year experience depression. There are currently numerous medications that doctors can prescribe to help reduce and perhaps eliminate depression in patients. Therapy is also used alone or is combined with depression medications which can be an effective combination. Some people choose to take herbal medicine for depression for a variety of reasons.

This is one of the more common and well known herbal medicines used for depression. St. John's Wort is a plant and the flowers from the plant are used to produce the herbal medicine. There is scientific evidence that shows that St. John's Wort is actually effective in helping patients who have mild or moderate depression. There have been two major studies performed on the effectiveness of St. John's Wort on people who have to deal with major depression and both studies found that the herb was no more successful in treating the patients' major depression than a placebo.

St. John's Wort a somewhat popular herbal medicine used for depression does have unwanted side effects including sensitivity when exposed to sunlight, anxiety, dry mouth can occur, some people feel dizzy, fatigue occurs, headaches are experienced, gastrointestinal problems have been reported and sexual dysfunction. It can have negative effects on the way your body processes some drugs including slowing down or increasing the speed of processing drugs. Some of the drugs that are known to be affected by St. John's Wort include Irinotecan, Indinavir, Warfin, birth control pills and anitidepressents. Researchers are not quite sure of the possible harmful long term effects from taking the herb. Research shows that you might have to take the herb for about four to six weeks before it will help you with your depression.

This is a variety of the good fat that is required for normal brain functions. The human body does not produce this substance. Some studies have shown a connection between having al low level of Omega 3 fatty acids and depression. Some researchers and doctors suggest that the patients' anti-depression medicines will work more effectively if taken with Omega -3 fatty acids. You can find the substance in fish oil pills. You can choose to eat colds water fish such as sardines, salmon and anchovies in order to increase your level of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Sam-e also known as S-adenosyl-L-methionine is considered a chemical and it is found in our bodies. Researchers believe it can increase the amount of serotonin and dopamine you have in your body and these increases can help reduce your depression. Sam-e is an over the counter product. Studies have shown that people who are on anti-depressants don't receive the full effect of the medications if they have a lower than normal level of foliates in their system. Increasing your foliate level with supplements or by eating foods containing foliates such as green leafy vegetables, beans, some fruits and vegetables and fortified grains. Talk to your doctor before you take herbal medicines for depression.

Aromatherapy Candles Gift of Health

We are all aware of how various aromas impact our thoughts, feelings and especially our memory.. Take, for example, the thoughts, feelings and memories aroused by the aroma of fresh baked bread, the scent of flowers in the garden, the aroma of honey suckle, the aroma of pine trees in the woods, lemons, and an infinite variety of other aromas. In fact, aromas impact us physically by making our mouths water, our bodies relax, and even the way we move our bodies without conscious thought. Given these effects of aromas, it would only be reasonable that we would intentionally use certain aromas to produce the pleasant and beneficial thoughts and feelings that we are seeking. The practice of doing this very thing with the aromas from essential oils distilled from flowering and other plants as well as herbs has come to be known as aromatherapy.

The history of aromatherapy dates back over 6,000 years ago with the Egyptians. They and we have used fragrances and aromas through the centuries to acquire emotional and physical health benefits from the essentials oils of plants and herbs. Aromatherapy uses natural essential oils distilled from plants and herbs, in contrast to the many chemical, synthetic substances used to scent many of the products we use today. Chemically based, synthetic aromas can produce many undesirable effects on our physical and emotional health. This makes it very important that we use aromas and fragrances that are distilled from natural sources.

Those of us familiar with all natural essential oil based aromatherapy products think most often of aromatherapy in the forms of lotions, soaps, bath salts and massage oils. Many of us are finding the value of using natural essential aromatherapy oils in the form of candles. Aromatherapy candles produce a flow of aromas from natural essential oils from herbs and plants into the air as the heat from the candle flame warms the essential oils contained in the candle. As we breathe in the air, the aromas from the essential oils produced by the heat of the candles, flows through our bodies and our brains allowing our minds and bodies to receive the health benefits of the aromas. Aromatherapy candles relieve stress, enhance concentration, relax our bodies, calms our moods, help us gain rest and renew increasing our physical energy and create a warm visual atmosphere as we enjoy our primal, innate attraction to the warmth and light of fire.

Some of the fragrances that hep us relieve stress and experience emotional balance are lavender, chamomile, rose and others. Lemon, orange grapefruit or bergamot fragrances help enchance our concentration. Peppermint, cinnamon, vanilla and rosemary help us revitalize our bodies and gain extra energy. For a sensual mood or to enhance relationships, we can use vanilla, rose or sandalwood.

Another important factor for us to consider is the material of the candle itself that contains the essential aromatherapy oils that we desire. There is a great advantage in using candles made from soy, a natural plant product, rather than candles made from paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is an petroleum product. Paraffin wax releases toxins into the air when they are burned. Paraffin wax produces unhealthy carcinogens that we remain in our lungs after we breathe them. Also natural cotton wicks burn clean without releasing smoke into the air we breathe. These toxins from paraffin wax also negate the benefits we are trying to receive from natural essential aromatherapy oils. Soy is also a renewable resource and is not imported as are petroleum based products. Aromatherapy candles made from soybean wax can be produced in this country and therefore, provide us some financial savings i.e. they are less expensive. Soybean wax candles also last twice and long as candles made from paraffin wax. Soybean wax is also more easily cleaned up with warm water and soap should a soy candle accidentally be dropped or tipped over. Paraffin wax is almost impossible to remove without professional cleaning.

There are some social advantages to using aromatherapy delivered in the form of aromatherapy candles. Aromatherapy benefits can be easily delivered to everyone in a group gathering or social event. Aromatherapy candles add an extra benefit of warmth, light and visual pleasure with glowing flame. Aromatherapy candles provide a wonderful aroma for the whole room that everyone can enjoy. In addition to providing aromatherapy in a very convenient form, aromatherapy candles make great gifts to express caring, appreciation and gratitude as well as delivering emotional and physical health benefits for those who receive aromatherapy candles as a gift.

AROMATHERAPY: HERBAL REMEDY

WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?

Aromatherapy is an alternative field of medicine which is gaining popularity, it aim not only on the treatment but also on prevention of diseases. Aromatherapy practice is predominantly based on the use of essential oils. Herbs are also used at times for aromatic and therapeutic effect. The discipline of studying herbs for the purpose of establishing their medicinal value dates back to the prehistoric era. The tradition of using herbs for the creation of medicines - including recreational mood-altering drugs – is in vogue today also1. It involves use of herbal oils. Aromatherapy activates the limbic system and emotional centers of the brain, activate thermal receptors, and kill microbes and fungi2.

Aromatherapy is the practice of using naturally extracted essences of aromatic plants to promote the health and well-being of your body, mind and emotions. These essences, called essential oils, contain the vital life force of fragrant botanical plants. Pure essential oils are the key to success with aromatically. They can restore balance and harmony to your body and mind, while adding depth, dimension, and definition to your life3.

The history of aromatherapy dates back to more than 3500 years before Christ’s birth, to a time when the use of aromatics was recorded for the first ever instance in human history. The truth is that the history of aromatherapy is deeply linked with the progress of aromatic medicine, which in its initial stages was typically combined with religion, mysticism and magic. In India, around 2000 BC, various writings mention the role of ‘perfumers’ and ‘incense sellers’. The word ‘aromatherapy’ was used for the first time in the 1920s by French chemist Rene-Maurice-Gattefosse, who dedicated his life to researching on the discipline of aromatherapy.

MATERIALS IN AROMATHERAPY:
Essential oils: These are fragrant oils extracted from plants mainly through steam distillation (e.g. eucalyptus oil).

Absolutes: These are also fragrant oils, but extracted from flowers or delicate plant tissues through solvent extraction (e.g. rose absolute).

Phytoncides: These are volatile organic compounds obtained from plants that destroy microbes.

Hydrosols: These are aqueous by-products of distillation (e.g. rosewater). Many herbs are used to make herbal distillates. They have culinary, medicinal as well as skin care uses.

•Infusions: They are aqueous extracts of various plant materials (e.g. infusion of chamomile)

•Carrier oils: These are oily plant based triacylglycerides used to dilute essential oils for use on the skin (e.g. sweet almond oil) so as to avoid irritation4.

PRINCIPLE OF AROMATHERAPY5:

Aromatherapy works by synergistically using the properties of all the chemicals in essential oil for their correct application

Aromatherapy works through-

a) Inhalation- The vapour formation of an essential oil is very minute and passes through the lungs from where they diffuse across tiny air sacs (alveoli) into the surrounding blood capillaries and eventually find their way into the systemic circulation from where they exert their therapeutic effect.

b) Skin absorption- The shin is a two-way road capable of both absorption and excretion ; for example, rub a small piece of cut garlic on the sole sof your feet, within 5 minutes you will have garlic breath . The tiny molecules of essential oils pass through the hair follicles, which contain sebum, an oily liquid to which essential oils have an affinity from here, the oils diffuse into the blood stream or are taken up by the lymph or interstitial fluid to other parts of the body.

MEDICINAL HERBS USED IN AROMATHERAPY:

Aromatherapy is used in the treatment of various diseases such as bronchitis, fatigue, migraines, respiratory ailments, acne, arthritis, muscular aches and pains, cystitis, cold and flu. Aromatherapy also encourages emotional peace and calm with a gently calming effect on mind, body and emotions2. Aroma therapy is a holistic treatment that works as a natural stress buster that can be easily fused into your work environment with immediate positive benefits for conditions like lack of concentration, depression, agitation and of course stress. Essential oils that form the basis of this treatment are derived from flowers and have calming effects on the central nervous system, thereby relieving you of stress and increasing concentration levels. Some of the aroma oils that work best to relieve office stress include the following6:

Lavender Oil: It can be used in a diffuser, which heats the oil and allow its molecules to harmonise with the atmosphere to keep you relieved. If a diffuser is not available, then put just a drop or two of lavender oil on a cotton bud or tissue paper and place it near your work station. Soon you’ll find the fragrance working for you. Not just this, studies show that scenting your office with Lavender essential oil can even reduce computer errors by at least 25 per cent.

Quantity: 1-2 drops

Neroli Oil: The best time to use Neroli oil is the moment you lie on your bed. Just put a drop of the oil on your pillow and let it work to give you a soothing sleep.

Quantity: Less than 1 drop

Geranium oil: The best way to use geranium oil is to create your own spa with it. Add it in a tub full of lukewarm water and soak yourself in it for 20-30 minutes before going to bed.

Quantity: 3-4 drops in bath tub.

Basil oil: Take a bowl of water and put less than a drop of Basil oil in it. Now, soak a towel in it and then use it to wipe off your body, specially the exposed parts of your body before going to sleep.

Alternately, you can also put one tenth of a drop of this oil behind your ear and feel the fragrance giving you a relaxing effect.

Fennel Sweet Oil: Again, it can be used in a diffuser placed in the room or on a cotton bud.

Quantity: 1-2 drops

Rosemary oil: It can be used in a bath or in a diffuser.

Apart from these, if you have any other favourite essential oil, you can use it in the following ways in your office:

1. A few drops of oil on the cardboard tube inside a roll of toilet paper works well to ensure a nice smelling bathroom.

2. Want to spread the scent around? Simply keep cotton ball dipped in essential oil between your business card box and there - you have scented cards!

Aromatherapy and Herbs that Promote Wound Healing8:

As many Diabetics can tell you, suffering from wounds that have poor or slow healing can become unbearable. If a cut or a wound heals slowly, it will increase the chances of becoming infected and spread. There are many natural herbs that will promote healing in various wounds and cuts, as well as carry antiseptic and germicidal properties. These ingredients mixed together are Mother Nature’s natural remedies to cuts and wounds. You can try products that carry one or two of these ingredients, however direct application and Aromatherapy methods will provide direct contact with these herbs therefore providing faster results. You may create an infusion by using fresh herbs, roughly one ounce of dried herb to one pint of boiling water that may be sipped or added to an Aromatherapy bath. However, for many cuts and wounds, a salve or poultice may be applied as well. To prevent infection in slow healing wounds, you can use Aromatherapy to clean and purify your air, thereby decreasing the chance of germs in your immediate environment.

Aloe Vera is an incredible medicinal plant that has been used for centuries. It is making headway in the realm of Aromatherapy by being used as a base for Essential Oils. To make a wonderful Aloe Vera based healing balm for wounds, add your choice of Essential Oils such as: Black Walnut, Fenugreek, Comfrey, Calendula, Horsetail, Rosemary, and Apricot Seed. All of these herbs also promote wound healing and help prevent infection in cuts and are a wonderful addition to your Aloe Vera based balm.

Black Walnut may be infused with Olive Oil for a wonderful herbal remedy that prevents infection in cuts and wounds. Black Walnut also treats fungal infections as well. It has been used for many centuries and is also a great darkener for brunette hair. You can add a few drops of Black Walnut oil into your bath, but be prepared for a dark ring to be left in the tub. It can be mixed with Tea Tree Oil for a healing salve that may be applied directly to cuts and wounds. The leaves, hulls, and bark of the Black Walnut tree have all been used in various herbal remedies and formulas.

Fenugreek was used by the Ancient Egyptians to treat everything from coughs and colds to skin infections and irritations. It was also a main ingredient in many Egyptian beautifying regimes. The seeds of the Fenugreek plant are known for softening the skin as well as preventing infection.

Rosemary is known for its rich aroma that smells like Camphor. It has many antiseptic properties, which makes it perfect for wound and cut healing. Rosemary has also been used for treating headaches, coughs, cold, mental confusion and fatigue, to brighten drab hair color, in perfumes, and to improve circulation and fight cellulite.

You can make an infusion of Rosemary for your bath by using one ounce dried Rosemary to one pint of boiling water. Rosemary is also a stimulant, so make sure that you don’t use Rosemary before going to sleep, or you will find that it will keep you awake.

PRECAUTIONS IN AROMATHERAPY5:

a) Avoid essential oils deemed hazardous.

b) Keep flammable oils away from fire.

c) Always consult your health care professional before starting any therapies with essential oil.

d) Dilute essential oils as recommended to avoid irritation.

e) Always test essential oils on a skin patch first.

Aromatherapy Herbs

Author: Juliet Cohen

Aromatherapy is an alternative field of medicine used for the treatment or prevention of diseases. It involves use of herbal oils. Aromatherapy is widely popular as a healing and calming cure for several common problems. Different types of aromatic herbs are available to suit different bodily needs. A correct herbal combination would ensure the best utilization of the healing power of this therapy. Different plant extracts are used for treating different kinds of problems. A combination of two or more herbal oils can be useful only in certain conditions. Lavender may be the most widely used of all aromatherapy herbs.

The aroma is calming and soothing, and lavender has medicinal effects in healing burns and wounds, helping digestion and improving respiratory problems. One of the most useful aromatherapy herbs, lavender is well tolerated even by people with allergies. Lavender blossoms are formed into wreathes, tied into bunches or braided into wands, then dried. Used decoratively, lavender adds color and texture to a room, and the delicate scent lasts for months. Sometimes the buds are stripped from the stems and made into sachets or used in potpourri. Lavender is often added to bath products because of its calming effect.

Luxurious creams and lotions are also calming and romantic. Lavender massage oil helps relax and soothe sore muscles. Lavender is safe to use on babies because it is gentle and soothing. Lavender baby powder and lotion help peevish babies relax and sleep, and lavender diaper cream is soothing and mildly antiseptic. As with all aromatherapy herbs, not everyone responds to lavender the same way. Even without any medicinal effect, however, most people enjoy the soothing, romantic scent of lavender.Essential oils are best when made from organically grown aromatherapy herbs, because chemical soil additives change the scent.

Essential oils are rated for purity on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being most pure. Essential oils are very reduced and should be used sparingly. A drop or two in an oil diffuser or on a light bulb ring will scent an entire room. Essential oils can be diluted with carrier oils to make massage or bath oil, or to add to unscented shampoos, soaps or lotions. Aromatic herbs can be used for a long period of time, even for a few years. However, like any other natural product, they also tend to lose their effectiveness over time. Some aromatic oils react to certain environment differently. Some oils may degrade on prolonged contact with sunlight.

Important Information About Aromatherapy Essential Oil

By Lance Winslow

You need to understand where aromatherapy comes from in order to understand how it works. Many will focus on the smell rather than the ingredients of the bottle when they browse through the oils in Bath and Body Works at the mall. The ingredients of the bottle is what will truly benefit you and your senses rather than fragrance even though it is important as well.

Aromatherapy has a great ability to make you feel better by taking you far away from reality. The heart of the aromatherapy products is the aromatherapy essential oil. The following is some basic facts about aromatherapy essential oil in case you are interested in learning more about the stuff you are spraying and massaging on your skin:

The Heart of It

From a plant of origin, aromatherapy essential oil starts as a concentrated liquid. Sage, rosemary and juniper are some common plants used in aromatherapy. To be useable as oil, essential oil from the planets is mixed with water and other oils. Be mindful of the amount used since too much concentration of essential oils can be hazardous to your health.

What It Does

There are many uses for aromatherapy essential oil. Therapeutic, emotional, physical and/or spiritual relief can come from these products. Many choose to use these products during meditation to help provide a spiritual awakening. For other it can help sore muscles by providing a soothing affect or to take your senses on a journey if you are stressed out. Aromatherapy essential oil is there to heal no matter what your need. The oils work their way into the bloodstream when rubbed into the skin which helps to create a soothing atmosphere in that specific area.

Various Products

You can buy aromatherapy essential oil at any natural retail outlet, but going to a masseuse is the way to get the full benefit of this product. Masseuses also use this product to offer aromatic massages. You can also have your significant other give you a relaxing massage after a hard day if you are a little more frugal with your money.

For aromatherapy it is really essential to have essential oil. After a stressful day or week, aromatherapy essential oil can come in handy from the purest source, Mother Nature. It is nice to know you can have something real as a source of healing since much of this world is artificial today. Therefore, it is good to have something that you can soak into your skin.

Aromatherapy Herbs For Healing

By Rebecca Prescott

Aromatherapy is a form of herbal medicine. It uses the scents in essential oils distilled from herbs, flowers and trees to improve health and vitality. Used properly, it can re-energize and rejuvenate the mind, body and spirit. Aromatherapy comes in many forms. It can be used as oils, candles, lotions and soaps.

How Is The Scented Oil Extracted From The Plants?

Many herbs are used in the production of essential oils and waters for aromatherapy. Essential oils are the aromatic compounds found in the herb. They are extracted by distillation. There are different methods of this but they are all basically the same.

The herbs are put into water which is heated until it produces steam. This releases and then carries chemicals, including the aromatic compounds. The steam is then chilled in a condenser and the material left behind is collected. Oils (which will become the Essential Oil) floats to the top of the distilled water and may be scooped off.

The distilled water part is called hydrosol. If you want to buy a herb or flower 'water' the best kind is a hydrosol as this is the by-product of aromatic distillation. Many 'waters' are essential oils added to water or alcohol and are not as good as true hydrosols.

Treat Aromatherapy With Respect!

Many people think that because the scented oils have 'only come from plants' that they can use as much as they like. Essential oils are very concentrated and are usually measured in drops. Strength wise - one drop would equal the volume amount of two cups. Ingesting one ounce of essential oil could prove fatal.

Unless you are a skilled aromatherapist, it's best to use essential oils only on the skin. Always mix the drops of oil with a 'carrier' like sweet almond oil. Undiluted essential oil can burn the skin.

How Can Anything From Plants Be So Powerful?

Our pharmacology has developed from herbal medicine. Many medications in use today are still derived from plants.
There are more than 250,000 known plant species and yet less than 1% of them have been thoroughly tested for use in medicine. A quarter of our prescription medications are derived from this tiny 1%. The list includes morphine, atropine, ephedrine, warfarin, aspirin, digoxin, taxol, hyoscine - so plants are pretty powerful and care should be taken. Isn't it amazing to think what other helpful medications are out there and as yet undiscovered!

Growing Herbs For Aromatherapy

A large area of crops is needed to grow herbs for aromatherapy purposes. This is because when calculated on the weight of fresh herbs distilled, plants only yield between 0.01% and 2% of essential oil. So a lot needs to be grown and distilled to produce reasonable amounts of oil.

To produce essential oils, the requirements are the plants, good soil (often organic), irrigation, reasonable shelter from harsh weather, harvesting and distillation equipment.

Hints And Tips On Essential Oils

1. Always read and heed advice on the labels on essential oils.

2. Keep them out of the sight and reach of children.

3. Never put essential oils near the eyes.

4. Always dilute with carrier oil before putting on the skin - or it will burn!

5. Essential oils are for external application only. Don't ever ingest them.

6. As with any new skin preparation, test the oil first. Dilute a drop of essential oil with carrier oil and apply to the skin on your inner arm. If there is any irritation, discontinue its use.

7. Many herbs should be avoided by pregnant women and by people suffering some health conditions. Always check before use.

Smoking is bad for your sexual health

By John Scott

Thanks to the graphic photographs that have been added to cigarette packets in many parts of the world, it’s impossible for smokers to avoid understanding that smoking causes cancer. Yet the tobacco industry continues to sell high volumes of cigarettes and other products that allow people to smoke or consume nicotine. Indeed, a recent case in the US has found that the marketing used by companies to suggest that their products are somehow safer is seriously dishonest if not fraudulent. Curiously, little attention has been paid to this case. Once people are addicted to the nicotine, they seem to care very little about what happens to their health. Everything is sacrificed for the pleasure of the drug once it hits the brain. Yet, cancer is only one of the worries that affects smokers. An equally important side effect of nicotine is that it’s a vasoconstrictor, i.e. it causes blood vessels to constrict. This forces the heart to pump harder and pushes up the blood pressure. If people smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, there is a serious risk this will develop into arteriosclerosis, a permanent hardening of the arteries, and ultimately lead to heart disease.

The main physical cause of erectile dysfunction is the arteries leading into the penis do not dilate or, having dilated, then constrict before sexual activity is over. Because nicotine constricts the arteries, smokers are significantly more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction than men who have never smoked. There is, however, some moderately good news. If you are not a heavy smoker and you quit while reasonably young, the walls of your arteries will slowly begin to resume normal activity. But if you delay quitting until arteriosclerosis has set in, there is no remedy. The erectile dysfunction is likely to be permanent even if you quit. There is further news that, depending on your point of view, may be bad. The longer you smoke, the greater the chance the nicotine will reduce the level of sperm you produce. Thus, even if you do manage ejaculation, you may not become a father. As an aside, the risk of infertility is significantly greater if you smoke cannabis.

The drugs like cialis used to treat erectile dysfunction are vasodilators, i.e. they encourage the walls of your arteries to dilate. If the walls have been damaged by smoking, the drugs will not work well or at all. This should all be news encouraging you never to smoke or, if you have the habit, to quit immediately. The risks to your health are not worth the short-term pleasure you get from the nicotine. This does not deny the difficulty many have. Nicotine is addictive and it can be hard to break the dependence. Indeed, many manage to give up for a few weeks and then lapse. There are products to help you quit and counseling can help support you through the worst of the withdrawal symptoms. If you find yourself craving, think of the potential loss of sex as the price you may pay for lighting the next cigarette. Cialis is good and will keep you going for a while but, in the end, impotence will catch you out (assuming the cancer does not get you first).

Top Aphrodisiac Herbs Enhancing Male Sex Drive

An increasing number of men are dissatisfied with their sex drive, with many suffering from erectile dysfunction ( E.D.), low libido and impotence. Many factors contribute to this decline in male potency, including overwork, stress, lack of sleep, and estrogens in the environment, among others.

Many of these men are turning to the natural herb alternatives to Viagra, Cialis and Levitra being touted on the Internet, tv infomercials, radio, or in print ads. Most, if not all these men's herbal supplements are overpriced and many contain yohimbe, an herb known to raise blood pressure.

Such products may also be weak, and a waste of the consumer's money. Though there are some that may work, they usually have short term results, not building libido for boosting desire, hot passion, stamina and performance in the long run.

Instead of the dissapointing fare of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra alternative pills, the male consumer needs libido enhancer herb supplements that are less likely to cause the unwanted side effects, and that also build libido to address the underlying causes.

Enter safe and effective aphrodisiac herbs to rescue the male mojo. Aphrodisiacs have been around for thousands of years, being mentioned in in the ancient Ayurvedic texts of India, the Bible, and in Chinese medicine - to name a few.

Indian Ayurvedic medicine looks at aphrodisiacs as "increasing ojas", the sexual essence. Various Indian sexual pills therfore use spices and exotic herbs like cloves, nutmeg, saffron and ashwagandha.

Chinese have a saying... ..."weak kidney, weak sex." In their system of herbal medicine they use terms like "yin" and "yang". Most Chinese sexual tonics aim at increasing yang, although yin is important as a foundation for deep rejuvenation of exhausted kidneys.

Think of yin as cool, yang as warm. Since yin also needed as a deep foundation, many formulas use both yin and yang herbs in them. The popular "horny goat weed" is yang for example, while licorice is yin.

The overall idea is to increase what the Chinese call "jing" or "ching", which is the sexual essence that is similar to the "ojas" of Indian medicine. Increasing kidney energy (jing) and also "chi", or overall "life force", boosts sex drive.

There are herbs in other cultures like maca from Peru, damiana from Mexico, and tongkat ali from Malaysia. These are single herbs, not an herbal blend as used in Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine. And they work more on testosterone and nerves , instead of kidneys.

Androgens like testosterone are naturally occuring in small amounts in some Chinese animal preparations. Some herbs increase the bodies own production of testosterone from the leydig cells of the testicles, which also contributes to robust sexual drive.

There are alternatives to the many overpriced, hyped, men's sex boosters with glitzy packaging. The male consumer has the luxury of reasonably priced, safe, time tested and effective products of ancient cultures.

Natural Herbs for Impotence Treatment

By greenherbal11

Herbs to cure erectile dysfunction or Impotence have gained popularity among men over the years. Aside from being effective, they are also considered safe. Even medical practitioners develop some herbal and natural supplements that help men overcome their sexually-related problems such as erectile dysfunction. Scientists and researchers are pouring out their efforts in coming up with a natural blend of sexual enhancer that promises great solution for men.

Erectile Dysfunction is a growing problem among men in the world today, but the good news is there is a cure. There are several treatments currently available. The one you choose will depend greatly on the cause of your impotence, and various other factors such as your medical history, any medications you take on a regular basis, and your stress level. Finding the cause is the way to the cure, but the cure may be simpler than you think.

Why Herbal Therapy Works?

Fact! Most scientists believe in the body's inside intelligence which allows it to cure itself if given the correct means.

Unfortunately, most people think that prescription medication is the only way to cure themselves. However, science and research are showing some simple concoctions that have been around for centuries are also beneficial too!

For instance, one of the most efficient treatments for kidney stones is a simple water flush which consists of drinking plenty of water for a number of days. It is also proven that cranberries are one of the most effective remedies for curing a urinary tract infection. And in the case of gout, the most recent discovery is cherries.

The variety of ingredients used in natural impotence treatments is extensive.
Natural Herbs That Have Been Used For Impotence Treatment

1. Ginkgo Biloba (Ginkgo Biloba)

As with so many other medicinal herbs Ginko Biloba treats the whole body rather than just one symptom. Recent evidence shows that it can increase the blood flow to the penis. Gingko Biloba is also used against depression and as a mental stimulator.

2. Yohimbe

This medicinal herb is probably the most popular herb today used for impotence treatment and Yohimbine, the active constituent in Yohimbe, is the most documented herbal solution for impotence and has been proven to work for erectile dysfunction. The downside to this is that Yohimbine can have many serious side effects like nausea, insomnia and nervousness. Also it can increase the heart rate if taken in large dosages. Both Yohimbe and Yohimbine are legally available over the counter as they are classified as a herbal remedy but they should always be used with the supervision of a health care professional.

3. Asian Ginseng (Panax ginseng)

Asian Ginseng has a very old tradition as a sexual potency herb. It is thought to increase sexual stamina and improve overall sexual health.

4. Muira Puama (Ptychopetalum olacoides)

A Brazilian shrub, that has been used in South America for centuries as an aphrodisiac and to stimulate the nerves. Considered by many as the best impotence herb available and in some clinical studies it has proven to be effective as a treatment for erectile dysfunction in some men. But as with many other medicinal herbs, more studies are needed.

5. Damiana

This traditional herb has the reputation as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Some other herbs that have been used as an impotence treatment are gotu kola, tongkat ali, butea superba and tribulus. Although not a herb, the amino acid L-Arginine has also been shown to be helpful for impotence.

Restore Your Immune System With Chinese Herbs

By Paul Keogh

Chinese herbs can protect the immune system to increase disease resistance.

Researchers have discovered that a class of Chinese herbs known as 'Immune Restoratives' strengthen and maintain the health of the immune system. A Chinese herbal medicine containing the scientifically proven herb Astragalus, blended with seven other potent immune restorative herbs (Atractylodes, Schizandra, Reishi, Codonopsis, Eleuthro, Ligustrum and Liquorice), represents a medical breakthrough in the treatment of immune system depletion and depression.

Evidence demonstrates that these herbs are powerful biological response modifiers (BRM), which increase the immune system's capacity to recover from infection, overcome disease and restore health. They achieve this by enhancing production of defensive white blood cells including phagocytes, leukocytes and lymphocytes, providing antibacterial and anti-viral action, increasing red blood cells and haemoglobin, stimulating hormones such as interferon, promoting release of protective proteins called immunoglobulins, reducing inflammation, improving detoxification and increasing the adaptive function of adrenal cortex to resist stress.

Research proves this Astragalus herb formula can restore a healthy immune system and speed up recovery from colds and flu, tonsillitis, bronchitis, glandular fever, Ross River virus and post-viral fatigue syndrome. This formula can help strengthen the immune system during surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and for chronic hepatitis and HIV/AIDS sufferers. It also assists with recovery from childhood illnesses, post-operatively and following physical trauma. For sports people and during times of physical stress it helps maintain peak effort, while increasing resistance to infection and enhancing general well-being at all ages.

The profound immune restorative effects from the above Astragalus eight Chinese herb combination are exemplified by the following quote: -

"Physically debilitated from recurrent respiratory infections, I couldn't maintain my triathlon training program. I am a past Australian Junior Triathlon champion and a member of the current under 23 Australian Triathlete team. Blood tests indicated very low immunity. For 12 months before I started taking the Chinese Immune Tonic I experienced cold and flu-like infections every few weeks, constant swollen glands, extreme exhaustion and incomplete recovery after even the mildest exercise. Within 6 weeks on this medicine I was back training and after 3 months my immunity was normal and I was again in good physical condition."

In Summary an Immune Restorative formula provides broad immunological support to:

• Restore a weakened immune system at all ages
• Alleviate chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) e.g. after glandular fever
• Increase resistance to infection e.g. cold, flu, middle ear and tonsillitis
• Break the cycle of recurrent infections, e.g. cold, flu, middle ear and tonsillitis
• Enhance recovery from illness and surgery i.e. during convalescence
• Treat chronic viral and bacterial diseases, e.g. chronic hepatitis
• Provide immune support during chemotherapy and radiotherapy

Important Notes About Herbal Remedies For Sleep Disorders

By Mason Hinton

Even if studies report positive benefits from herbal remedies, the compounds used in such studies are, in most cases, not what are being marketed to the public. There have been a number of reported cases of serious and even lethal side effects from herbal products. In addition, some so-called natural remedies were found to contain standard prescription medication.

The following warnings are of particular importance for people with insomnia:

• Chinese Herbal Remedies. Studies suggest that up to 30% of herbal patent remedies imported from China having been laced with potent pharmaceuticals such as phenacetin and steroids. And one study reported a significant percentage of such remedies containing toxic metals.

For example, the herbal remedy Sleeping Buddha was recalled in 1998 because it actually contains a benzodiazepine, the major ingredient in many prescription sleeping pills, and also appeared to increase the risk for birth defects in pregnant women. Reports of a few cases of acute hepatitis have occurred from Jin Bu Huan, a Chinese herbal remedy sold as treatment for pain and insomnia.

• Valerian root. A number of studies suggest that valerian may be helpful for insomnia. Side effects include vivid dreams. It should be noted that high doses of valerian can cause blurred vision, excitability, and changes in heart rhythm.

• Kava kava. Kava kava has sedative actions and studies have reported that it helps improve stress-induced insomnia. The most common side effect reported is dizziness. It should be noted, however, that kava kava has been associated with liver failure in some cases.

It also interacts dangerously with certain medications; including alprazolam, an anti-anxiety drug. And it increases the potency of certain other drugs, including other sleep medications, alcohol, and antidepressants.

• Tryptophan and 5-L-5-hydroxytryptophan (HTP). Tryptophan is an amino acid used in the formation of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is known to promote well-being and has been associated with healthy sleep. L-tryptophan was marked for insomnia and other disorders but was withdrawn from the market after a contaminated batch caused a rare and even fatal disorder called eosinophilia myalgia syndrome.

5-htp, a byproduct of tryptophan, is still available as a supplement. There have been reports that some brands contain a substance called Peak X, which some evidence suggests may be harmful. To date, no serious adverse effects have been reported and reliable brands are available. Evidence that 5-HTP alleviates insomnia is scant.

You don't have to use drugs - whether natural or chemical to help you beat insomnia. There are some great behavior therapies that can be implemented to help you get to sleep.

1. Aromatherapy: It's been proven that certain scents and fragrances can aid in sleep by increasing the state of relaxation that we are in. Note: Lavender oil is one of these scents.

2. Massage: A full-body massage can greatly help to release the tension and stress that we've accumulated throughout the day. If a full body massage isn't possible, than just ask a loved one to give you a quick shoulder rub. After all, a quick massage is better than nothing at all.

3. Herbal Tea: A cup of herbal tea before bed can really help to get you into "sleeping mode". Of course, not any herbal tea will do the job -- it has to be an herbal tea with strong sedative properties. Such teas include valerian, passionflower, lavender, and many others.

4. Deep Breathing: This is one of those natural health remedies for insomnia that people tend to scoff at. Why? Because they don't think taking deep breaths will help to cure insomnia. Although that is partly true, and deep breathing won't likely cure your insomnia completely, it can actually help you to get to sleep faster. How does it help? It provides large amounts of oxygen to the body and it assists in relieving stress and tension throughout.

5. Soft Music: The best type of "soft music" is that which comes from specialized sleep soundtracks. These special soundtracks are made up of gentle pulses, tones, and rhythmic beats that can actually lull a person to sleep. Play these sounds when trying to sleep and you'll find that it's nearly impossible to stay awake.

When it comes to insomnia you can't beat natural health remedies. They are inexpensive, they aren't dangerous, and they don't require the supervision of a doctor or medical professional. In short, they are just a natural solution to a widespread and ever growing sleeping disorder.

Natural Remedies For a Sinus Infection

By David Urmann

Sinus difficulties are one of the most common illnesses we can get. Every one of us is experiencing and being bothered by this illness every so often. Throughout the years, many treatments and cures have been developed in order to cure this viral problem. Doctors offer medications that alleviate the discomforts brought about by this sickness. However, these remedies are oftentimes costly.

There are also effective herbal and natural remedies you can try. It is only up to you what kind of treatment you prefer. Natural treatments are generally anything that has not had any chemical or artificial alterations. Natural medicines come from pants and herbs. It is proven effective and is preferred mostly by advocates of the environment. They believe in the healing strength of plants around.

Natural treatment is cheaper because it does not need any machine or equipment. Some natural methods are described below.

First of all, you can try nasal irrigation. It is a preventive measure that you may consider in order to eliminate your sinus difficulties. Nasal irrigation with a saline solution is one method that will help you control sinus symptoms and may possibly lead to curing some mild infections. This includes procedures and steps that can be done at home.

It is not a new discovery but many professionals recommend it to their patients who are suffering from chronic sinuses and other respiratory disease. It is a very natural, and most of all, an effective method. It can be done any time, especially when you are feeling congested. In doing so, it will provide you with immediate relief.

Another natural treatment is drinking plenty of liquids especially water. Being hydrated can prevent the mucous membranes from thickening. Liquids can help thin the mucous. You need to drink water or tea and other clear drinks for fast relief. Some would make calamansi, orange or lemon juice. These are citric drinks that also help cure sinus.

Stay away from dairy products when you have a sinus. Dairy products have substances that trigger the formation of more mucous and make breathing more difficult. This is according to some doctors. Dairy food like cheese, milk and even ice cream may worsen the sinus. These products should be avoided especially when you have sinus problems.

You must also take in foods that contain high levels of antioxidants, like spinach, berries, tomatoes, broccoli, grapes and garlic. They help in boosting one's immune system. They also help in preventing sinus problems and infections. These foods are proven to be helpful in treating sinus problems as well as other health problems.

You can also opt for the steam treatment. Steam helps keep the mucous loose so that it can keep it moving in the sinuses. Sinus infections occur, once the mucus thickens and is not properly drained. You can apply moist heat directly to your face in order to keep your sinuses open.

Hot compress will work as decongestant. There are many heat packs available in the market. They can be warmed up in a microwave easily. You can also boil hot water and dip a face towel on it as an alternative to heat packs. Or you can put hot water in a bottle. Wrap the bottle with a towel before applying to your forehead.

A cold compress on the other hand relieves sinus headaches when you put it in your forehead. The cooling effect helps shrink the membranes and will bring relief from your sinus pain and headache. You can also add some apple cider vinegar on the solution for the steam. You can also dilute it in water and drink it for relief, especially when you feel that a sinus infection is about to start. Apple cider vinegar is also helpful in other illnesses.

Herbal Medicine: What is Herbal Medicine and is it Safe?

Author: Healing Headquarters LLC

Herbal Medicine is a form of alternative medicine based on the use of plants in the form of herbal supplements, raw herbs, herbal extracts, herbal tinctures, and other herbal remedies such as tablets, ointments, and capsules. Herbal medicine use is on the rise. Many health enthusiasts are turning to this natural, plant-based form of medicine as opposed to the chemical, pharmaceutical choice. A natural form of medicine, herbal medicine is the most ancient form of medicine on the planet. Many modern day prescriptions and conventional medicines are based on a form of herbal medicine.

What Is Herbal Medicine?
Herbal medicine is the use of plants to treat disease. Oftentimes called herbalism, herbology, or botanical medicine, herbal medicine is considered ‘alternative’ in the modern day, though it has an extensive and esteemed history. Many herbalists use the entire plant, from the flowers, stems, leaves, and roots, in the form of everything from teas to tablets. These plants contain natural, chemical substances that can treat the body for various ailments.
The History of Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine dates back to prehistoric times. Primitive man used plants for everything from shelter and food, to clothing and medicine. Herbal medicine evolved over time, with observation and experimentation. Each village and tribe throughout the world observed and experimented with the natural plant world around them and developed a knowledge base of regional herbs and herbal medicines. Many of these primitive herbal experimentations hold true today, with many conventional medicines stemming from herbal origins. For instance, morphine originated from the use of the opium poppy herb, while Echinacea was the common herbal treatment to fight off infection prior to the creation of antibiotics.

Modern Day Herbal Medicine
While some people feel that herbal remedies are an ‘alternative’ form of holistic medicine, they are actually the bases of at least one-fourth of all conventional medicines. Today, many plants are synthesized for pharmaceutical use, stemming from ancient, healing traditions of herbal medicine. If you are seeking to find a more natural and gentle form of medicine, you may want to visit a local health food store or try to find a local herbalist. Tinctures, extracts, teas, lozenges, ointments, salves, rubs, tablets, and capsules, are available at most health food stores and can be wonderful, natural alternatives to conventional medicines.
If using herbal medicine it is recommended that you let you doctor know each and every herb that you ingest to prevent a reaction between the herbs and any allopathic medicines that you may be using.

Herbal Medicine In Cats

By Allan Michael Taylor

Herbal treatments are viable treatment option for your cat, however one must exercise caution as many carry harmful side effects.

Since the dawn of man humans have being using herbs to treat various illnesses, it's only natural we'd want to try the same with our beloved cats.

There are many factors which influence the effectiveness of an herb, namely what portion of the plant is used, how old the plant was when harvested and how it was processed after harvest.

Most of the time there have been few to no studies on the effects of particular herbs on animals so your cat's health is not guaranteed in their use.

Various plants and herbs are often the base for conventional medicine so it's entirely possible for too much of an herb to cause something like an overdose.

One herb that is especially dangerous to cats is pennyroyal.

It makes a good insect repellent but it is highly poisonous to both cats and dogs and should never be used around them.

White willow bark contains salicylates and can work well as a pain and fever reducer.

Aspirin also contains salicylates and was developed from the white willow bark.

But just as aspirin is hazardous to cats so is white willow bark.

Another potential problem with herbal medicines are that they may interfere with the workings of more conventional medicines.

Take for instance bitter melon, it can increase the duration of insulin action thus wreaking havoc on regulating diabetes in a cat.

Regardless of these dangers, there are some herbs which can be a benefit to our cats and their health.

Echinacea can stimulate the immune system in general ways and contains no known levels of toxicity.

Although is has no toxic qualities you still need to be careful with Echinacea if your cat suffers an auto immune disease.

Marshmallow can ease coughing and also stimulates the immune system.

Licorice is good for easing skin inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. But one must also be cautious using this with any cats that suffer heart, liver or kidney problems.

Ginger can ease sickness experienced from travel and sooth the digestive system. But even too much ginger will be a bad thing, it can cause depression and should not be used on a pregnant animal.

Milk thistle is good for the liver, St. John's Wort can decrease anxiety and encourage relaxation.

Because so few studies out there focus on the use of herbal remedies with cats and because of the possible conflicts they may have with existing medication, one should only try herbals remedies under the instruction of a professional veterinary herbalist.

There are many veterinarians which use herbs and other natural remedies in cats, including acupuncture; many of these treatments can be combined with a conventional medical treatment.

Veronica Beale is a cat lover with a particular interest in cancer treatment in cats. She is very open to the use of natural therapies in cats. Her website is at http://www.catscancer.com

Amazingly Simple Natural Cough Remedies You Can Make at Home

By Liz Alderson

There are many natural cough remedies you can make at home.

I'm going to show you how to use items you might already have in your store cupboard and garden, or can easily buy at the supermarket to make your own cough medicine.

You may be concerned about the chemicals that over the counter cough remedies put in your body - I know I am - and of course, if you have children, you will be even more worried about what you give them.

I think a natural remedy is always preferable and can be just as effective.

Many over the counter remedies are based on traditional remedies but are full of preservatives and chemicals.

So here's 3 natural cough remedies you will be able to use safely.

The first is honey and garlic.

Simply chop up a garlic clove and mix it with a teaspoon of honey - then swallow it!

The second is my particular favourite.

Honey and sage.

Sage has many healing properties and is widely used in herbal medicine - it's an essential in your medicinal herbal garden as well as your culinary.

Simply take about 6 sage leaves and crush them lightly in your hand to begin the release of the essential oils. Pop them into the bottom of a cup or mug.

Take some boiled water - just off boiling point and pour over the leaves.

Add a teaspoon of honey and stir it in to dissolve.

Leave for about 5 minutes for the sage to infuse - then lift the leaves out and sip the sage and honey tea.

It will bring relief from a persistent cough and will ease the tight feeling in your chest.

The third cough remedy is sage and honey again, but this is made into a syrup that you can either take by the spoonful (as a cough medicine) or stir into hot water with lemon to make a soothing drink.

Take a large pan and pour in two pints of water and bring to the boil.

Add 1 oz (25g) of dried sage - tie it in a muslin bag so that it can be easily lifted out, if you don't you will have to strain the liquid before going onto the next stage.

Simmer for 20 minutes, then either lift out the sage bag or strain through a cloth to remove the herbs.

You could also use a really big handful of fresh sage leaves for this - just crush them in your hands to begin the release of the essential oils.

Add a pound jar of clear honey and stir well.

Simmer for a further 20 minutes then allow the mixture to cool before putting into a jar.

You can keep this for about 6 months - the honey is a natural preservative.

When you need some, just take a spoonful neat or pop some in a cup with lemon juice and hot water for a soothing natural cough remedy.

You can take this several times a day to soothe your cough - 4 or 5 times will give you quite a bit of honey - just beware if you suffer from raised blood sugar for any reason.

These natural cough remedies can all be made out of things you will either already have in your store cupboard and garden, or can easily buy on your next shopping trip.

The information in this article is in no way intended to replace medical advice. If you have persistent problems that do not respond to herbal treatments within a few days, then you should consult a doctor.
